Resolution 2: Serve my Comm. and Share the Gospel

I
REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY
want to impact my community for Christ.

I am a working mom whose husband works nearly 80 hours each week and we
have very little flexible income to give.

I love people and hate to know that so many of my neighbors don't know
Christ and are perishing - all I want to do is show them His love
so He can save their lives.

This year I hope to figure out a way to
minister to them.

Here are some ideas I've come up with:
  1. Put greeting cards on their doors on holidays with a sweet message and scripture.
  2. Invite the occupants of my building over for a get together.
  3. Host a Bible study for the women in my building.  Hopefully to branch out to the other 14 buildings in my complex.
  4. ...and that's about it...
Do you have any ideas?

{My church is very very small and does not have a current outreach program so I'm venturing out on my own.}

beautiful are the feet

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed?
And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard?
And how are they to hear without someone preaching?
And how are they to preach unless they are sent?
As it is written,
“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
-Romans 10:14-15

Do you guys every think about how many
people have never heard the name of our Lord?
We are so blessed to live in a country where Christianity is not illegal.
Where we can carry our Bibles and preach the Gospel without fear of persecution.

If God hasn't called you to go, please support missions through your prayers, discipleship and giving!!!

I want to be like Christ!

My friends and I had a wonderfully refreshing time at the True Woman Conference.

My favorite part was simply worshipping the Lord with other godly women.

I loved hearing from Crawford Lorttis, Nancy Leigh Demoss and Mary Kassian.

Kay Arthur's talk was by far the most convicting for me.
(Oh, to spend 30 minutes over coffee with her...)

She asked many great questions:
"What are you boasting in?"
"What is your influence?"
"Are you raising your children to walk in righteousness and to restrain themselves?"
"Are you a woman seeking love?"
"When was the last time you wept over the harlotry going on in this world?"

But the question that I've been mulling around ever since the conference is,
"What kind of woman do you want to be?"

I want to be a woman like Ruth, like the Proverbs 31 Woman and the Beth Moore all rolled into one!

I want to be a woman of good character.
I want to have faith and peace during hardships.
I want to work hard.
Love with my whole heart.
I want to love, honor and submit to my husband.
Raise my son to be a godly young man.
I want to serve others.
I want to have a deep love and knowledge of God.
I want to have big blonde hair.
I want to be humble.
I want to be godly.

I do not want to be brash.
I do not want to be overly opinionated.
(note I did not simply say opinionated.)
I do not want to be agressive.
I do not want to be lazy.
I do not want to be disrespectful.
I do not want to be self absorbed.
I do not want to be materialistic.

I want to be like Christ.

There's Nothing Better!

Honestly,
is there anything more exciting than to find out
that a friend (or family member) has been saved?!
Honestly?

One of my dearest friends in the whole wide world sent me a facebook message yesterday to let me know that the Lord has saved her and she's going to be baptized NEXT SUNDAY!!!!

This is totally how I felt yesterday when I found out...

I think John said it best in 3 John 1:4,

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

I bring you this news to remind you to keep praying and praying and reaching out! I've been praying for this friend for many years and the Lord has been faithful to answer in HIS perfect timing!

What am I doing?!!

My prayer this morning was that the Lord would convict me of any sin that I haven't yet confessed and repented of so that I may fellowship with Him once again.

You see, I've been so busy and wrapped up in what I have going on that I have forsaken my time with the Lord and my relationship with Him has been suffering.

I'm such the prodigal child.

I've often run my own way and only looked back once shaken by something that's beyond my ability to handle or control.

Thankfully the Lord brought me to a place of worship today that wasn't brought on by some sort of personal disaster - I sat at His feet and prayed. I sat and read His Word.

And it was GOOD.

He convicted me of so much today.

1 John 3:18 was His weapon of choice:

"Little children, we must not love in word or speech, but in deed and truth..."

That verse stuck in me like a thorn in my side.

It was something I knew I needed to meditate on today.

After my Quiet Time was over I headed out the door to Chick-Fil-A for my usual cup of sweet tea and granola parfait, except today was a bit different, I felt the urge to listen to a preacher by the name of Paul Washer.

I saw him preach once and I found myself trying to sink into into the pew - his words are so convicting! The Lord is really using that man! {watch this for proof}

Anyway, in the sermon I listened to this morning (different from the one I linked to) Bro. Paul asked: "What are you doing [for God] with those hands of yours?!"

He was preaching on Romans 12:1-2 (my favorites) and focused on giving your body up as a holy and living sacrifice.

As soon as I heard the words, "What are you doing with those hands of yours?", I immediately knew that this was a part of what God wanted to communicate to me through 1 John 3:18.

I talk a good talk but am I really living it out?

As of now my hands do so many frivolous things: change channels on the tv, browsing the internet for random junk, typing blog posts that are practically pointless, eating when I'm not actually hungry, Facebook and so many other selfish things.

What my hands could should be doing: sharing the Gospel, helping others, keeping a neat and orderly home, teaching my son, serving and loving my husband, turning the pages in my Bible, lifted up in praise, and laying before me as I'm knelt in utter worship before a Holy God.

The question just keeps turning and turning in my mind...
Keeps convicting me.

I just have to ask...
What are YOU doing with those hands of yours?

In the Middle of the Night...

I really need coffee - IV style - right now.

So last night I had an AWFUL headache.

AWFUL.

I'd say borderline migraine.

Anyway, I totally missed all of Jillian's new show on NBC by falling asleep halfway through and being dragged off to bed by my husband so I could properly sleep it off.

Then, at 11:34 {that exact time} I awoke.

I'm talking bright eyed and bushy tailed awake.

So I did what any other sane and rational woman would do - I picked a fight with my husband.
It was really really dumb, really. I got mad that he moved my foot from its very comfortable position so he could put his foot there. Bless his heart - what is he going to do with me?

After I realized my irrational behavior I left him to slumber in peace and I went out to take some more migraine medication and watch Law and Order: SVU.

I didn't realize that the caffeine in Excedrin Migraine would cause me to stay up until 4 in the morning but.... yeah. I stayed up till 2:30 watching a wonderful movie called Martian Child with Amanda Peet, John Cusack and his sister Joan Cusack.

Then the Lord started working on my heart.

An hour and a half later, my sins confessed and forgiven, the Lord revealed to me that I had fallen back into a state of laziness and selfishness.

In all honesty, I have let the house go a bit these last few weeks; I haven't been reading the Bible with Ethan as regularly; I've just been loafing on the couch waiting for my hubby to get home.

I'm thankful for and desperately NEED the Lord's conviction!

Oh, and sorry this is a barely threaded together post - I'm running on 4ish hours here.

Sharing Your Faith: Humility

Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.
Matthew 23:12

The way we approach sharing our faith is of utmost importance.

First, we need to realize that sharing our faith is as much a privilege as it is our duty as Christians. Christian martyrdom is very real in the world we live in. As Mark Driscoll put it "Our God is a little offensive! Most of the people who REALLY liked Him got killed!" We are privileged to live in a country where we can share our faith openly without persecution.

Second, remember where you came from - you weren't born into salvation. "We too all previously lived among them in our fleshy desires... But God, who is abundant in mercy, because of His great love that he has for us, made us alive with the Messiah even though we were dead in our trespasses." Ephesians 2:3-5

One thing that really turns the lost off to the Gospel is the "holier than thou" attitude that many Christians have. I love this verse in Ephesians because it serves as a strong reminder that we were once lost too. None of us are good - no, not one! Even in our salvation we are not good - we are in the process of being made good (sanctification) but we still fall into sin (or dive right in, to be truthful). We are saved by His grace and not our works.

Finally, we need not be so haughty as to think that some one's salvation hinges upon us. We are merely God's mouthpiece in this process. HE does the work of salvation - not us. We plant the seed and He brings it to life.

"Some wish to live within the sound of a chapel bell;
I wish to run a rescue mission within a yard of hell."
C.T. Studd

Sharing Your Faith - Prayer

Ephesians 6:11-12 tell us "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places...."

Here's the situation: when we start sharing our faith, showing people how to escape the grasp of the devil, we are invading his territory. If we are not under the protection and power of God we are susceptible to oppression, discouragement and spiritual attacks.

"...praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, for which I am ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak" - Ephesians 6:18-20

What should we pray for specifically?
  • Protection against the schemes of the devil.
  • Boldness when proclaiming the gospel.
  • That the Lord would give you the right words to say.
  • Ask for their hearts to be ready to receive the gospel.
  • That they would accept Christ as the Lord of their lives.
  • Forgiveness of your own sins.
  • Purity and correct motives in your own life.

Sharing Your Faith - Preparation

Let's be honest...

Sharing your faith boldly is intimidating.

Actually, it can be down right scary.

As a "people pleaser" myself, I'm often worried about scaring people off, offending them or even {*shudder*} what they will think of me {oh, how selfish can I be?!}. We need to remember to set aside our fears, insecurities and selfishness because we're dealing with souls and eternity.

We have the Good News - THE BEST NEWS - and since faith comes by hearing, ladies, we have a job to do.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

1 Peter 3:15 tells us
to "always be prepared to make a defense to
anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you."

The first step in preparing yourself for defending
and sharing the Gospel is knowing it.

{here is a great quiz to test your knowledge of the Gospel}

How do we get to know the Gospel well enough to share it?

Jesus says in John 8:31,
"If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples,
and you will know the truth..."
{check out the link attached to 'abide' for its definition}

Abide means to remain, to reside.
We need to reside ~to live~ in His Word.

Here are some practical tips for abiding in His Word:
  • Have a daily quiet time to grow your relationship with Him.
  • Memorize Scripture.
  • Plug into an in-depth Bible study.
  • Listen to Biblical preachers/teachers speak on the verses you're studying.
  • Ask questions, LOTS of questions, just be careful who you're asking - make sure they are of sound theology.
  • Sara at It's Good to be Queen has a great idea for a Scripture Memory Group - you can consider starting one at your church or with your friends!

Here are some helpful resources for abiding in His Word:

Suggested Scripture for getting to know the Gospel:

  • Prophecy of Jesus, the crucifixion and resurrection: Isaiah 53
  • The life of Jesus: Matthew, Mark, Luke & John {john's is my personal favorite}
  • Romans is great for learning the gravity of sin, justification by faith alone, God's sovereignty in salvation and much much more.
  • 1 John teaches us application of the Gospel: true doctrine, obedient living and fervent devotion.

Ladies....{tapping my foot}

What's up?!

I post about a vintage map, an old table cloth or a spice rack
and you all go nuts. (Yes, I consider 6 comments on one post nuts. What? I'm ok with being a small blog.)

...but I blog about sharing your faith in your day to day life and all I get are crickets?

(no i don't mean these crickets)

So, watch this video (it's awesome and hilarious)

and then leave me a comment...

Remember, sharing our faith isn't something we are forced to do (cause people choose not to all the time {not that it's right but still...} - trust me, I'm one of those) but something that we should do and that we're privileged to do - most of our world can't share their faith without fear of persecution. Sadly, I believe that our day is coming so we need to be shouting the GREAT NEWS OF CHRIST from the rooftops.

Here are my questions, just in case you didn't catch them yesterday!

What do you struggle with most when confronted with sharing your faith?

When was the last time you got to share the Gospel with an unbeliever?

What is your favorite way to initiate conversation
that leads to evangelism?

Have you ever seen/heard of anyone you shared the Gospel with come to faith?

Sharing Your Faith - Introduction

For me there's nothing more intimidating than sharing my faith.
At the same time, nothing gives me more joy than sharing my faith.

How can we overcome the fear of sharing so that we can experience the joy of sharing?

That, my friends, is the journey I'm on.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

After a VERY long dry spell (I'm thinking something like a year or so) the Lord has been gracious and has given me many opportunities to share my faith in the last month.

It's very exciting to be used by the Lord but it is VERY humbling as this has brought to light how unprepared I have been to answer for what I believe.
My goal in this series (posted on Thursdays) is to provide you all some instruction, tips and resources for sharing your faith.

As wives and moms (who are {i think} the majority of my readers), sharing our faith often takes the back burner to diapers, dinner and dishes. Our responsibilities to serve our husbands and disciple our children are of utmost importance but still we are called to reach beyond our homes and immediate families.

Please help me develop this series of posts to what would most appeal
to my readers by commenting on the questions below and voting on the poll on the side bar!
Thanks!!!

The Best Mother's Day Ever

First off, Happy Belated Mother's Day to all of the moms out there!!
I hope your day was as special as you are.

My Mother's Day weekend was phenomenal.

Nothing went the way I wanted it to.

I wanted to wake up late on Saturday. Spend the morning garage saleing. Have a delicious lunch at a cute cafe. Get a pedicure and take a nice long nap. Afterward, we'd head over to my husband's family's place for a couple of hours to celebrate Mother's Day then head home to watch The Blindside with my hubby.

Instead, my husband went fishing all night (Friday) three hours
away and didn't get home until 9:30 Saturday morning.
Ethan woke me up at 6:30am hollering about some experiment he just did with his chocolate milk (he apparently made himself) and wanted to know what channel the History Channel was on.
I left all of my Weight Watchers stuff at work so I couldn't go to my last meeting.
Went garage saleing with Ethan who got in trouble no less than four times.
Came home.
Cried.
Sobbed that this was "the worst mother's day ever".
David got home, we cleaned and cleaned.
Then everyone from church showed up for the
Apartment Ministry cookout - which we "hosted"
without having a choice in the day or time.

I bet you're wondering how this was the best mother's day ever.
Here's how...

The cookout ended up being a lot of fun.
We met some neighbors.
Had some great food.
Got to see baby Addie.
Visited with church family and the kids ran circles in the yard.

Afterward we took a very short nap and RAN to my husband's family's house (we were late of course) for a Mother's Day cookout. I had only intended to be there a short amount of time: dinner, cake then home by 9.

The Lord had a MUCH BETTER plan though...

David's mom, grandmother and cousin sat on their front porch and visited with me for HOURS. We talked about all kinds of stuff and REALLY bonded!!! It was great but..

The best part though: I got to share Christ with them!!!
David's mom has been "working" on them for quite a while but through His divine wisdom, He delayed our leaving so that I could boldly share the Gospel.

I couldn't have asked for a better Mother's Day present!

Teetering Near Toppling

I just love hanging out with my mentor group, they are so encouraging
but still know how to hold you accountable.

Last night they told me that my plate is still too full and they suggested that I back out of a couple of things. I just don't know what to back out of!!! You guys have read my list of responsibilities before so you know how I've got my hands in everything.

I feel a lot like that coffee cup (above). Stacks and stacks of things to do and I'm just teetering on the edge of having it all together and total disaster. Do I enjoy having a lot to do - YES! I feel it keeps me out of trouble. When I get bored, I spend money. When I spend money, I get in trouble. To avoid the hassle of having to explain why we need another lamp, I medicate by never saying no.

If you need anything done, I'm the girl to ask - I never say no.

I've never shied away from a challenge, I'm tough and I'm organized (or at least, I like to think I am) so I always feel up for a challenge. Not to mention, I'm a people pleaser and I take friendships/professional relationships/family VERY seriously.

It would KILL me to let somebody down or not meet a need.

I know that where I am and how I'm overloading myself is dangerous. It's easy to forget that just one small wrecking ball could come through and topple everything.

At this point, it wouldn't take much to completely derail all of this and cause me to go completely off my rocker.

Still though, I am trusting in the Lord to keep me and help me to lie down in green pastures, lead me by still waters and restore my soul. I know that His yoke is easy and His burden is light.

While I don't feel like I've been released from any of the places I am currently serving in, I am praying that He will make it clear to me what I can step away from so that I can focus on taking care of my husband, son, home and ministry to the best of my abilities.

How about you, how's your yoke?

My WM Story (and books)

Four years ago I finally stopped running from God's calling and surrendered to the ministry He called me to: Women's Ministry (WM)!

It's been a long hard road and I am SO thankful that He has allowed me to continue to serve Him through this ministry.

The Lord really took me by surprise when He called me to WM. Growing up, I was the living definition of "tom-boy". Sports, mud, fishing, horses - that's what I was all about. I could have cared less about frills, girl scouts, gymnastics and dance. The company I kept in high school was primarily boys, girls were just too dramatic and catty. I praise the Lord that while I was unsaved, He preserved my purity and reputation - I would never recommend my youth girls go the route I did. It's too risky!

The church that the Lord has lead my husband and I to worship in is very very small (60-ish in Sunday School) and did not have a functioning WM. Having been saved at the ripe old age of 18, I had very little experience when I started working with WM, so I picked up every book I could get my hands on.

Today I thought I'd show you all some of my favorite WM books!
(click on the pictures if you want more info)

This book was instrumental in helping me start from the ground up. The WM at my church isn't what I know it can be but, with this book's help {wait: most importantly the Lord's help}, I know that it will impact lives for His glory!

Becoming a Titus 2 Woman was a gift from my pastor's wife. As a person who judges books by their covers (seriously, I do), I did not expect much from it but I have to say -

THIS BOOK IS AMAZING!!!!!

If you serve with women or girls in any capacity, you need to read this (including mothers of girls)!

This is another MUST READ for someone working with youth. Oh, and add this to your list if you're a parent. YOU NEED TO READ THIS BOOK! Let me tell you why...

(what you are about to read is 100% true)

The best friend of a 13 year old girl that I actually know is pregnant with her SECOND child. This baby girl is only 13 years old. Babies are having babies - EVEN in the church!

Read this book!
Seriously.

Speaking of youth and girls...

If you or someone you know is called to serve youth girls THIS is the book you MUST have. Advice, tips, tricks and important fill the pages of this easy to read book.

I have neither been compensated for nor approached to share these resources with you. The opinions and comments above are my own personal opinion. I don't know how to write a blog disclaimer so...yeah... hope this works!

Holy and Living?

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.
Romans 12:1-2
~
I guess you could say that this it my life verse.

It seems like every time it starts to feel like I'm slipping away from where I should be, God brings this verse back up.

This time the question that keeps ringing in my ears is,
"What kind of sacrifice are you?"

Do I give God my best? Do I give Him the first fruits of my life?

I have to admit that I have not been presenting myself as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to Him. Just as the guest preacher at my church pointed out in the book of Malachi, I've been offering up a lame and sick offering to the Lord.

A son honors his father, and a servant his master. If then I am a father, where is my honor? And if I am a master, where is my fear? says the LORD of hosts to you, O priests, who despise my name. But you say, 'How have we despised your name?' By offering polluted food upon my altar. But you say, 'How have we polluted you?' By saying that the LORD’s table may be despised. When you offer blind animals in sacrifice, is that not evil? And when you offer those that are lame or sick, is that not evil? Present that to your governor; will he accept you or show you favor? says the LORD of hosts.
Malachi 1:6-8

When I think about the various areas of my life and compare them to Scripture, I can't help but notice that I've put myself before God.

Instead of giving the Lord the first fruits of my day, I'd rather hit the snooze button again.

Instead of giving the Lord the first fruits of my labor, I'd rather hold onto that money just in case we don't have enough for gas or food.

Instead of honoring God through putting my family and others before myself, I would rather watch some TV to "recharge" before doing anything. You know, like all the advice books and magazines give you. I've "gotta take care of me first or I'll be no good to anyone". As good as that sounds, it's just not Biblical.
**side note: I'm not saying neglect yourself, I'm just saying don't do it at the expense of who you should really be serving.

The Lord is SO good to draw me back to where I should be!

I am so thankful that even though I am still sinful and selfish, He's still faithful and gracious to forgive!

Now the question is...how do I fix this? How do I put my priorities back to where they need to be?!

Please tell me I'm not alone in this! How do you all keep Christ the main focus of your life?

this is LOVE

"And this is love: that we walk according to His commands."
2 John 1:6

When I was younger I thought that the way to get to Heaven was by being morally good and obeying the 10 Commandments.

I am so glad the Lord showed me the truth - I CANNOT EARN MY WAY INTO HEAVEN.

IT IS BY FAITH ALONE!!!

As much as I consider myself to be a "good person", I still break God's laws and still deserve my punishment - Hell. As the Bible says, "For the wages of sin is death..."

We are given the GIFT of salvation by God - not because we deserve it - but because HE LOVES US! "But God proves His own love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us!" - Romans 5:8

This is the part where my Sunday School kids typically ask me "Then, how come we have to obey God and the Commandments?"

The Commandments were given to us for two reasons:

#1. To show us our need for a Savior! "Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law." - Romans 7:7 It is our standard for right and wrong.

#2. They give us a way to show our LOVE for Him. We don't have to obey the Law but when we've been saved and the Holy Spirit takes His place in our hearts we will WANT to obey the Law. We won't see our salvation as just a "get out of hell free card" but rather, as a means to really have a RELATIONSHIP with Him. If we love Him and want a healthy relationship with Him we should obey His commands.
~~~~~~~~~~
This is the part where I get honest.
I haven't been obeying God's commands. Here's just one example that I touched on last week...
I've put other things before Him. Entertainment, "rest" (really it's laziness), housework, television, friends and most of all - myself.
This morning, for the first time in a LOONG time, I turned off the television and got on my knees. I wept and asked for His forgiveness. I also asked Him to help me see and understand what He has to say to me as I read His Word.
The book of 2 John was put on my heart and that's where I read from today. I will read and re-read this book for a little while now. I know what I what I have gained from this reading just today is just the tip of the iceburg - God has SO much more He wants me to know!
There's so much more that He wants you to know, too!
I have challenged myself to do two things -
#1. Get up 30 minutes earlier that I have to so that can spend intentional time with Him.
#2. Read intentionally. John MacArthur has a great system for reading and understanding the Bible - he reads a book (or if the book is long - a section of it) everyday for a month - researching and mediating upon it. I am going to do this with the book of 2 John. It's not an accident that this book was laid upon my heart today.
~~~~~~~~~

I am so glad that the Lord doesn't give up on us - especially me! I love Him with everything in me but I am SO easily distracted by the things life throws my way. He is SO good and faithful!

Amazing Song...

Lord I'm tired
So tired from walking
And Lord I'm so alone
And Lord the dark
Is creeping in
Creeping up
To swallow me
I think I'll stop
Rest here a while

And didn't You see me cry'n?
And didn't You hear me call Your name?
Wasn't it You I gave my heart to?
I wish You'd remember
Where you sat it down

Chorus:
And this is all that I can say right now
i know it's not much
And this is all that I can give
yeah that's my everything

Bridge:
I didn't notice You were standing here
I didn't know that
That was You holding me
I didn't notice You were cry'n too
I didn't know that
That was You washing my feet

Do You Know What I Need?

A bedroom this cute!

No but really...

I need to FOCUS!

I am like a chicken with my head cut off!

Do you ever lose sight of your priorities, vision and overall goals for things? Take this blog for instance: It has become more and more random...less about faith, Ethan and all of our goings on. and more about....well, random stuff.

That's what the rest of my life has been like lately. I feel like I've just woken up from running on auto pilot for a really long time and I'm just now trying to regain some sense of direction.

I know the first thing that I need to do...

Make Christ the center of my world! He is my Lord, my Savior, my Rock. How dare I feel like I can manage my life without Him. I think I need to read Living the Cross Centered Life again.

I'm going to try to start getting up 30 minutes earlier than I "have to" so that I can spend some intentional time with Him. I really REALLY really want to sit at his feet each day just to praise Him and know Him more!
