Fight or flight?

Guess who got in his first fight at school?

Yep.

It was a pretty clear cut case of self defense
except that he didn't stop when he should have.

Basically, one of the bully's at school was picking on him and he told him to stop by the time he counted to three (tells you a bit about how we parent him, huh?) or he'd go tell the teacher.

Well, before he got to three the kid hit him.
So, Ethan hit him back.
Self defense, like I said.

But then, Ethan decided that wasn't good enough so he kicked him.
Then, the other boy kicked him back.
Well, Ethan apparently hurt him (or his feelings?) and the boy ran off to tell the teacher.

Both boys ended up in trouble.

I'm sure most people wouldn't agree with my husband and I but Ethan didn't get into much trouble when he got home.  He did get a stern talking to though.

We told him:
#1 - if you can get out of a situation without hurting anyone (with words or fists) then do it.  It's the best choice.
#2 - use your words wisely
#3 - NEVER EVER EVER throw the first punch
#4 - fighting always has consequences, even if you're defending yourself you'll face consequences at home and at school

Are we way off base here?!

I'm a girl - I don't know how to parent this sort of thing!!!

Not off base at all. We tell our kids the EXACT same thing, in the same order. We also tell them that if they follow that order, we will back them all the way. I don't think any child should have to stand there and take a bullying. But that's just me :)

i have to say that in the moment, i might throw in a kick or two myself. but i think you are dead on about fighting being a last resort. justin and i were just talking about this. good job, momma.

I don't have children, but if I did I think these would be great rules to live by. You and your husband are doing a wonderful job!

Great advice. I haven't come up against this yet, but I'm sure it's inevitable since I'm raising four boys. Man, parenting is hard!
