Extreme Makeover: Me Edition

Lately I've been exploring the blogosphere and have found some pretty great ladies writing about some pretty great things.

Today I landed on ae filkins, home of Extreme Makeover: Me Edition.

Each week we're supposed to update everybody with the status of our weight loss/healthy lifestyle journey. Today I decided to join in.

Question of the Day:
What's your favorite beauty secret?

Yeah, soooo....
I'm a tomboy and I don't have a lot of beauty secrets but I do have a few up my sleeve.

1. Lever 2000.
This is my secret for the occasional body acne breakout. I heard a long time ago that it has the same ingredients as Clean & Clear so I started using it. Now, I've never seen any research to back up that statement but I have seen fantastic results.
I'm not kidding...this stuff has worked for me!

2. Baby Oil.
I have wild curls and frizzy hair, pretty much every woman's nightmare. The best way I've found to tame this mane is after I finish drying my hair, whether straight or curly, I take a teeny tiny bit of baby oil - the size of a pencil eraser, kinda - and rub it into my hands. Afterward, I run my fingers through the ends of my hair then smooth out the rest of my trouble spots.

I know it sounds crazy but as long as you don't over-do the baby oil, your hair will be shiny and smooth.

3. Gold Bond Ultimate with Chamomile (GBUC)
I know what you're thinking: 'but isn't that for the elderly?'. Well, all I have to say about that is NOT ANYMORE (assuming it was at one time)!

I have used lotions from Aveeno, B&BW and Ahava and have loved all of them but GBUC beats them all! I was shocked the first time I used it. Seriously shocked. It's a thick moisturizing cream but it absorbs into the skin really well and leaves it as soft as the day you were born...or something like that.

I do have to add one thing:
Ahava would be my front running favorite if it weren't for the fact that 3.4 fl. oz. costs $19 - I bought 13 oz. of GBUC for $8.

Starting Stats:
I've told you all hundreds of times where I am on my journey to weight loss. I have quite a bit of weight to lose (about 80lbs), I have PCOS and I love fried chicken - so already the cards are stacked against me.

Because of PCOS's tendency to cause insulin resistance and the fact that am high risk for it because of my family history (we're Cherokee, so that should explain it) - I must get this weight off. Over the last three months I've cut my calorie intake by at least 1000 grams per day and I've started working out at the very least three days a week; sometimes up to 5 times per week. In those three months with these changes, I lost 6 pounds.

6.

For me that's pretty disappointing.

So I started googling and talking to friends with PCOS to try to find something that might help.

In a lot of the research I've done the South Beach Diet keeps coming up. It seems to be good for PCOSers because it's low carb and many of the women have had fantastic results. I borrowed the book from the library and once I'm finished reading it, I just might jump in and give it a try.

Do you have experience with South Beach?
I'd love to hear about it!

Stats:
Weight to lose: 80 lbs
Weight loss to date: 6 lbs
Days worked out this week: 2

It'll happen. Keep plugging away, and this forum is a really nice way to keep motivated and to get encouragemet from other women.

I am going to try the baby oil for hair and try the gold bond lotion.
Thanks!

So glad that you found us! We can do this together.

If you read the archives of my blog (you may already have) you will see that I have been struggling for years and have not had the results I have wanted.

I'm bound and determined to make it work this time and if it means I have to work out like a maniac and eat salad...I will do it!

I post more than just Wednesday's because it helps keep me motivated.

Have a great week!

Welcome to Extreme Makeover: Me Edition! I joined just a few weeks ago and am so glad that I did ~ everyone is so encouraging, and I think it helps me to stay on track knowing that I'll be "reporting" my successes and backslides each week.

You have some very unique tips! I may have to try baby oil in my hair ~ after a lifetime of frizzies, I'd love to finally find an inexpensive cure!

Have a great week!

I've never done the actual South beach diet, but I LOVED their pizzas and breakfast burritos! :o)

My mom lost a ton of weight on South Beach, but in the end it really wasnt something she could do forever, and she gained it all back. But it can be a good jump start if you're excercising on top of it. Dont get downhearted, I think you're doing great!

I am so trying the baby oil. I have the frizziest hair if I don't use tons of product. Ugh.

Congrats on the 6 lbs, I have PCOS too so I know how hard it is to lose weight. Keep up the good work!

Have a great day!

You can do it girl! It is a long slow road for sure. Hopefully SB diet will work good for ya!

What neat tips Amanda!!! I am hearing lots and lots about cocnut oil for skin for cooking for allergies...for everything!

I think the South Beach diet sound great. Let me know how that works for ya. I loves me some carbs. And they don't have french toast on their menu.

(Hence, why I remain fat!)

God bless!
Amanda
