Bea Arthur passed away this weekend at the age of 86. To those that know and love her, Bea's contributions to the world of television as democratic dynamo Maude Findlay and teacher-cum-Brooklynite Dorothy Zbornak will not soon be forgotten. This woman epitomized dolman sleeves, oversized tunics, pantsuits, and a fashion sense very directed by gold lamé. (Who else could pull of a mint green velvet suit, complete with bow tie?)
In short, Dorothy owned her style and her attitude. She stood up for a different kind of woman that conventional television audiences had never encountered. Her dry wit and zingers always left Golden Girls audiences laughing. Bea made aging seem not quite so scary for women, and her performances as Maude and Dorothy were groundbreaking and memorable.
Here's to you, Bea! Thank you for being a friend!

Ok. I am such a nerd, but this news made me so SAD. I watched The Golden Girls every day after school in elementary school with mom.
This makes me sad too! :(
