Christmas Present

We're going to take a break from our Emergent/Emerging research to take a look at what we're planning on doing for our son's Christmas present.

I love the antique/vintage style and have already pursued that in other rooms of the house. Sadly, though, we have neglected Ethan's room for quite a while. I have good reason though!

Ethan has a disorder that prevents him from being able to process sensory inputs the way a normal person would be able to. He gets overwhelmed and overstimulated which causes him to basically freak out. It's really hard for him to be in rooms with a lot of people, a lot of colors (or other visuals) or a lot of noise - this is why Pre-K is so hard for him.

Anyway...it has been very challenging for us to figure out how to decorate his room in a way that won't cause him more sensory......(what's the word?)....distress. But I think we've finally got it. We're going to go with either a vintage hockey theme (this kid loves him some hockey) or we're going to go with a vintage hunting/fishing theme. Whatever we do must stick with a blue, white and light green color scheme and all wall decor should be black and white - if possible.

Yesterday I found this really awesome headboard/footboard on Craigslist for $30! Vintagey, no?

Do you guys know of any good websites that sell vintage or vintage inspired decorations for a child's room? I'm at a loss!

And I promise you...even if I have to use a disposable camera and get the pics put on a CD I will post before and after photos of his room!

Are we lame for decorating his room as his Christmas present?

Amanda, it is wonderful that you want to give your son a special, peaceful room of his own for Christmas. It is something that won't be broken in a week or that he will grow tired of. The themes you chose sound terrific for him. Bless you and your family.

I don't think it's lame at all..we've had friends who redecorate rooms for their kids as Christmas or birthday presents and the kiddos love it!
Heck, I wish someone would redecorate MY room for Christmas! ha!
